Atlanta's Nasty Nest

We all know we need a bounce back.  In come the leafs, love them or hate them (it is more fun to hate them) it is a team the Thrash should beat the hell out of.

Our powerplay is a joke. No wonder teams are hooking and slashing us like there`s no tomorrow. NOBODY is scared of our powerplay

Ian White was coming to the bench on a shift change and busted his ass right at the bench door. I yelled at him through the crack in the glass and basically told him that if he couldn't stand up on skates to get off the ice. FUN. Loved hecking the entire Leafs bench.

A win's a win. It reminds me of how we won games earlier in the season. Not perfect but good enough. Gotta get the PP going though.

Not the best game, but a great effort to dig out a win by a tired team and their superstar captain. Enjoyable to watch, too...after that 1st intermission.

Lots of good:

Kubina's leveling of Ponikarovsky.

Kovy's 3-point game, with 29th and 30th goals. His 5th straight season (7th total) of 30 goals or more. Actually, he's still working on his 5th straight season of 40 goals or more. He's on a pace to blow that stat out of the water. Let's hope he does it here.

Jimmy Slater's hard work to set up Kane's wraparound goal, and his FO winning percentage tonight of 73%.

Peverley scoring and, hopefully, getting hot again.

Antropov's 6 hits. Like the big man playing BIG.

Thorburn's take-away to assist on Kovy's game-winner. Really enjoy a good ole Kovalchuk goal celebration.

Toby's end-to-end clearing pass on the game-ending, win-preserving PK. Something tells me he can handle some more PK time, Coach. After all, he IS a trained professional.

There's still the bad:

Hainsey's 2nd penalty of the game that caused the need for a win-preserving PK. He got an even-strength assist and still finished -2.

Kane's obvious trip that caused the Thrash to go down 5-on-3.

Carolina's Thursday. A good time to claim 2 more points.

Down by two at the 1st intermission it dawned on me that the season hung in the balance. With the white elephant of the contract, players like Army and Slava who have looked like they are going through the motions, Pavs looking like he had in December and the Olympic break coming I just got the feeling that losing to the Leafs something could be lost in the teams mind. The second half of the season there can be few if any distractions.

Pavs stood up, Kovy responded big time, Kane finally had his hard work pay off, Peverley was rock solid in all three zones and Bogosian played like a #1 defenseman.

Pavs is becoming an NHL level goalie, he will still have rough nights but last night showed how far he has come. Two goals in 37 seconds, he could have packed it in but the kid responded. He faced 40 shots, allowing only three.

While Pavs played the most important position our best player acted like a man who should wear the C. Kovy was moving well and with 8 shots on goal he was a huge factor in the offensive zone.

Want to watch a player make good decisions, keep your eye on Peverley. He add deep support in the defensive zone, has sticks in lanes in the nuetral zone and makes smart passes in the offensive zone. Wish Kozlov could give us Peverley's effort in any ofthe three zones.

I thought we were losing Kane a week or so ago, thought maybe he had hit the wall. He looked frustrated and tired. Over the last two weeks he has continued to work and last night he got the payoff. That wrap around is going to be a sweet move in two years when he is bigger.

Bogosian may be a second half of the season type player. Early this year he was a hot mess in the defensive zone, great in the offensive but looked lost in the defensive zone. Now he takes the right man and is using the body to seperate the puck from the player along the boards. He can still skate end to end but is making better passes if he has support.

Nice to see most of the Thrashers step up in the second and third. Right now if DW could get a bag of pucks for Armstrong and Kozlov he should consider it. Slava is hurting us on almost every shift and Army looks like he wants to be somewhere else.

XLB's return was great...his hit on Slava...while controversial led to their creep up goal. I think he liked our welcome back!

I get the feeling that that may be exactly what Army wants. Maybe back with his buds in Pittsburgh? I think he's been absent-in-spirit for many games recently. Big assist last night, though.

Slava entered last night's game on a 4-game point streak. But I won't be surprised if we find out after the season that Slava's been battling knee or shoulder injuries again. We know by his conditioning that he's got an impeccable work ethic. If the effort's not at previous years' standards, I think there's a good chance its due to injuries. That's happened with him before.

Read that shoot-out article with Kozlov's quotes? IMO, that's not the mind of a man who doesn't care, but one who is actively and deliberately looking to contribute where he can.

I'm sure the big hit by XLB didn't matters any.

I would at least take Kozlov off the powerplay. He has been really bad the last 2 games. He missed a few passes that resulted in pucks clearing out the zone. Focus Slava... FOCUS.

Did y'all notice that 2 guys up top check on Kovy and Enstrom and the 2 guys down low check the center (Antropov) and the left winger? Kozlov always has a lot of room... and he either passes back down to Antropov or takes a blast that end up missing the net. They are not affraid of him. Put someone that will bring respect and hopefully draw the opposing players a bit more. It would free Ilya's side a bit as well as making space in front of the net for Antropov to fetch some rebounds.

Like i said in my initial message after the first period. Our powerplay is a joke. Lots of passing between the D and that's about it. We ended up scoring one goal but on how many occasions? We were down 2-0 after the first but we had 3 powerplays while the Leafs had only 1. That's not good. It's frustrating because our PK is actually doing very well. If the PP could get busy we'd be winning a lot more hockey games.

Slava's focus is the problem. That is exactly right. He's failing on too many routine plays and he's not making good decisions. You can't tell me there isn't a distraction on the ice. That man is distracted.

Army on the other hand... I think he's a guy that has lost his identity a bit. He used to be a hard hitting, clutch goal scoring, glue guy. I think with the different full offense system, the influx of skill guys, and the constant line rotations the guy has lost a sense of himself and he's just keeping up. I still like Army and he's one of those guys I root for to have a good season, or a good game, or a good shift. I just want to resurrect his identity like Slater has recently. Just come out and play hard, working within your strengths. Be a menace by finishing some checks and battling in those dirty areas. Kane, Thorburn, Slater and Army need to be those one on one puck battling guys that dig into the corners, the front of the net, or working hard on a responsible back check that keep the transitions working in our favor. They are our "little things" guys that you always hear players and coaches talk about. I want Army to get back to that.
